Honolulu police said they suspect drunken driving and racing may have been involved in a fatal collision that killed an 11-year-old boy in Waimanalo early Sunday. Two women also were hospitalized in critical condition.

Police said the collision happened at 1:45 a.m. near Nalu street on Kalanianaole Highway.

According to police, four vehicles were involved. The victims were in a family car turning into a home on the Mauka side of the highway. Police said three other cars were speeding and attempting to pass the family car.

“They were traveling at a high rate of speed. The fourth vehicle was a Honda and it struck the first vehicle which was a Hyundai. The backseat passenger was an 11-year-old boy. He was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene,” said Honolulu police Maj. Thomas Nitta.

The victim was identified as 11-year old Samuel Kassebeer of Waimanalo.

Kassebeer's family gathered in mourning at their home in Waimanalo. A family friend witnessed the collision.

“All three cars were racing each other. And I guess one of them misjudged and overtook and hit these innocent people, this family that lives here, who were just trying to come home,” said Carl Weidemann.

A 20-year-old man driving a Honda Accord was arrested for investigation of drunken driving and negligent homicide, police said. Police were looking for the driver of another dark-colored compact car, and asked for witnesses to come forward.

Friends remembered Kassebeer as a good kid, looking forward to Big Boy football practice next week.

"He was a cute, big boy. He had his whole future going, especially for football. And the family is a wonderful family,” said Weidemann.
