HONOLULU -- The Kaimuki Neighborhood Board listened to a plan to test out adding Sundays to the hugely popular farmers market at Kapiolani Community College. Members did not take a vote on the test market idea but did provide input about what KCC officials and the Hawaii Farm Bureau should take into account with the expansion.Traffic is the over riding concern. The KCC lot is also used as a place to shuttle crowds who attend the various cultural events at Kapiolani Park. Earlier this month the Korean festival used the KCC parking lot to shuttle park goers.“There are shuttles that do come up to KCC's campus, but we do look at all that. With the timing for the Korean Festival there wasn’t that much of an overlap,” said Carol Hoshiko, a representative of Kapiolani Community college. As the market was winding down, the Korean festival was just ramping up.The extra market day could also impact the popular New Hope church at Diamond head Theater which has services on Sunday morning. Many of the members park at KCC and cross over to the theater.“We are concerned about the community members, safety for people who are going to church and people who would be coming to the market. And I myself am a Kaimuki resident. I have that same concern for myself as well as my family,"said Hoshiko.Another worry is that Sunday is when most of the fun runs and road races take place around Diamond Head. The concern is for the walkers and runners who participate in the events.Currently many tour buses and trolleys drop off visitors at the market. Those large vehicles could pose a conflict with a scheduled race. For some farmers the extra market day would be an opportunity to get off the waitlist, The Hawaii Farm Bureau sees the expansion as a way to promote local produce.Radish farmer Grant Hamachi said he won’t be able to make both weekend days. He can only make the market every other weekend because there is too much farm work to tend to.“I harvest on the weekend so I have to be there. So I'll take off one day on Saturday, but on Sunday I will be on the farm harvesting,” said Hamachi.“Like anything else it's a test market, so we will have to see what will happen,” Hamachi said. One added plus of the crowds is the effect on business at the nearby theater. Kaimuki Board Chair Vernon Tam said Diamond Head Theater officials believe the market has helped ticket sales since thousands of people see the marquee which advertises shows every weekend.
