HONOLULU -- The first day of the 63rd annual Friends of the Library of Hawaii book sale at McKinley High School launches Saturday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. but members will get first dibs Friday night. There are more than 150,000 books to choose from. This sale is the book worm's dream whether you're a historian, a cook, or just looking for a good mystery novel.“There's something here for everyone. There's children books, incredible Hawaiiana books. Most of it is out of print so you come to find that type of thing,” said Friends of the Library’s Byrde Cestare. The sale boasts collections of CDs, DVDs, including TV series, and even a small collection of high school and college yearbooks.“You know how you lose it, you move and come back. So we have a whole section on Hawaiian yearbooks,” said Cestare. The same volunteers who helped unpack and organize every book by category will likely be on hand to help if you get too overwhelmed. Volunteers said it’s also a good idea to come in with a game plan.“We suggest that when you first arrive at the door that you might want to get one of our book bags which is new this year, a friends of the library book bag and get a layout because this will tell you where all the sections are," Cestare said. The price is right. Most books range from $1 to $5. For rare books, you will pay more. A book written and autographed by Queen Liliuokalani is valued at $1,500 and three volumes of the Cook Voyages are being sold for $5,000. Friends of the Library members get first crack at the sale items Friday.“Anyone can come to the doors and join tonight. It goes back to support the programs of Hawaii's public libraries. This sale benefits every single library in this state," Cestare said. She said the inventory will be updated throughout the week for those who cannot make it this weekend.Last year’s sale raised about $200,000 and officials hope to exceed that number this year. The sale begins Saturday June 19 running through June 27.Cash, checks and credit cards will be accepted. For more information, including dates and times log on to www.friendsofthelibraryofhawaii.org.
