ABC announced Tuesday it will produce a medical drama for prime-time TV in Hawaii.

The new series, called "Off the Map," is about the adventures of a group of doctors and nurses who leave their jobs to practice medicine in a remote clinic in the Amazon.

Hawaii's scenic locations will be used to portray the Amazon.

"Off the Map's" executive producers, Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers, are responsible for ABC's medical drama hits "Grey's Anatomy" and "Private Practice."

Filming of "Off the Map" begins in Hawaii next month. That means with "Hawaii 5-0," two TV productions will be filming in Hawaii at the same time.

State Creative Services-Film Office director Georja Skinner said it is a great time for film production in the Islands.

"It is so exciting to have a second series here with "Off the Map" in production at the same time as the iconic "Hawaii 5-0," said Skinner. "It not only helps our production community, but our visitor industry as well. This production helps put Hawaii back on the map in terms of economic recovery."

The new series will fill a vacuum left here after ABC ended it's series "Lost" in Hawaii after six seasons.

Skinner said she is not certain how much money "Off the Map" will bring in but from other films already in production here, the state is seeing close to $262 million in production expenditures this year. That includes money from five feature films shot in Hawaii in 2010 including "The Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" which is expected to bring in another $85 million in production expenses.

Skinner said "Off the Map" should help attract visitors to Hawaii.

"I think having Hawaii in front of people every week on a television screen can't help but promote tourism," said Skinner.

Skinner said even though "Off the Map" is a story of adventures in the Amazon, the Hawaii state film office will make sure its Hawaii filming location is pointed out whenever the series is publicized.
