The Kokua Festival was held under the stars Friday night at the Waikiki Shell.

The environmentally friendly concert brought musicians together to promote sustainable living as part of the Earth Day weekend.

Musician Ziggy Marley--son of legendary Bob Marley---performed at the shell Friday night.

Local musician Jack Johnson headlined the weekend concert.

The concert is a fundraiser for Johnson’s Kokua Hawaii Foundation.

“This is an amazing cause. All the money goes back to the foundation and it’s a beautiful event, beautiful people,” said Marlo Tell, Jack Johnson fan.

“What we do is work with the kids, teach them about recycling, sustainability, eating locally and the importance of overall health,” said Kokua Hawaii Foundation volunteer Kim Manzo.

The Kokua Village features 50 eco-friendly businesses.

“We decided to use organic fabrics, locally made in the U.S. and local artists here for the artwork,” said Jennifer Binney of Coral&Polyp.

There were clever ways to spark people's interest in conserving natural resources.

“What we have here is a bicycle where you can burn calories, not fossil fuel, and that’s the whole idea behind it. It’ sort of a cute little way to show we can light up our world through other different means,” said Ari Patz, president of Sustainability of Association of Hawaii.

One child showed off her purse made out of plastic soda can rings.

“If it gets into the sea then the animals are going to get caught around the neck and they may choke and die,” said 11-year-old Darby Van Savage.

Zero waste collections sites are set up throughout the venue.

“The more you reduce, reuse and recycle, the more we are going to help and save the planet,” said 11-year old Zoe Papike.
