Fire Engulfs Bus During Rush HourBus Was Only 6 Months OldPOSTED: 12:28 p.m. HST July 10, 2003 HONOLULU -- Fire engulfed the engine compartment of a commuter bus Thursday morning during rush hour.
Firefighters arrived at about 8:30 a.m. to find flames spewing from the engine of an accordion-style bus.
The 80 passengers on the express bus from Waianae were evacuated without injury. They were placed on another bus within minutes, according to officials. They said the bus was only 6-months-old.
The bus stopped near the housing facility for the "zipper mobile." Police closed all the lanes at one point while firefighters put out the flames.
