WAIPAHU, Hawaii -- Andy Ganigan was known as the original "Hawaiian Punch," and it was the power in his gloves that put him on the Ring Magazine's list of 100 greatest punchers of all time.During his career, Ganigan held the North American Boxing Federation Lightweight title in 1978 and won the World Athletic Association lightweight title by knock out in 1981.He retired from boxing in 1983 and has since led a quiet life in Waipahu -- until the night of March 26.According to family and witnesses Andy Ganigan was at the Last Stop Lounge in Waipahu having drinks with a friend before the attack. Shortly before midnight, the two left the bar and walked outside, where Ganigan was attacked."We don't know even how many people were involved. Up to three, possibly. Three or more and it just continued," said Kia Ganigan, Andy Ganigan's oldest son.Ganigan's head injuries are so severe, the family said he no longer has motor skills and can barely speak.Ganigan's family said doctors told them Ganigan may never fully recover and will likely need 24-hour care for the rest of his life."Just talking to him and just seeing him tied down. Seeing him how he is now compared to how he was before, it's really hard," said Kia Ganigan. Those who know Ganigan said they are shocked by what has happened to the man who was once a threat in the ring."It's not good. You never like to see those things," said Steve Kelly. His family said they are hoping someone will come forward with information."We have no clue as to why it would happen, how it started, why it started," said Kia Ganigan.Honolulu police have opened an assault investigation and are trying to sort out exactly what happened. The family is planning a fundraiser to help pay for mounting medical costs for Ganigan.Donations can be made to "Friends for Andy Ganigan" at any Bank of Hawaii branch. It can also be mailed to "Friends for Andy Ganigan" P.O. Box 894469, Mililani, HI 96789. The family can be contacted through Michelle Shue (808) 381-4000.
