HONOLULU -- Vandals forced an international gymnastics meet to be relocated at the last minute earlier this year. But on Saturday, competitors hit the mats in a repaired venue. The Junior Olympic State Gymnastics championships are being held this weekend at the Aiea District Park Gym.In January, the building was trashed when vandals broke in and used the fire hose to flood the gym. The vandals have never been found. That forced the competition to move to the old Ranch 99 market in Mapunapuna. Many teams pulled out of the event.More than $27,000 in repairs to the floor and electrical system were needed. The fixes were completed just in time for the state championships."They dealt with it great. All the kids kept good attitudes and training was actually better after that than it has been," meet director Joe Tripp said. The competition runs through Sunday.
