Members of a girls’ softball team on Maui are accusing the Department of Education and Maui County of discrimination.

Three team members, their parents and coach are suing to get equal access to playing fields before their season ends in May. The American Civil Liberties Union filed suit in Federal Court Thursday, accusing the DOE and county of violating federal law.

The suit claims the girls are being forced to play on an unsafe dirt field strewn with rocks and the field is not suitable for girls’ softball.

Baldwin High’s boys’ baseball team practices in the Iron Maehara Stadium, which seats 1,500 people and includes a manicured field and batting cages.
