A teenage boy died after he was thrown from the bed of a pickup truck in Kailua on Wednesday at about 6:30 p.m.

It happened on Kalanianaole Highway near the Hawaii Youth Correctional Facility.

Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the City's Emergency Services Department said the boy was riding in the back of the pickup truck when he was ejected.

The boy was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition, but he later died of his injuries, Cheplic said.

A second teenage boy was taken to the same hospital in stable condition, he said.

Police closed one lane of the Kalanianaole Highway in both directions to conduct their investigation.
