HONOLULU -- Federal authorities have released new details about the events leading up to Friday's fatal car crash on the H-3 Freeway.Authorities confirmed they were following the red Mustang just before the deadly crash. The details emerged in a federal criminal complaint against Johnny Resendez, Jr. He is accused of working with others to distribute about 37 pounds of crystal meth in Hawaii. Resendez admitted he shipped two vehicles which contained illegal substances to Honolulu. One vehicle was involved in the fatal car crash in the Tetsuno Harano Tunnel on Friday. Federal authorities identified the man killed in that crash as Marvin Edgar Burrow Jr.According to court documents Resendez shipped the red Mustang from Oakland, California to Honolulu on Horizon Lines, on March 1st. However, law enforcement officials found 37 pounds of crystal meth in the car’s door frames and under the rear seat.“Once the methamphetamine was discovered inside the vehicle, preparations were made to make a controlled deliver of the vehicle to the person who was supposed to pick it up,” said federal prosecutor Jonathan Loo.Federal authorities removed the crystal meth and replaced it with a substance called pseudo meth. They also wired the car to track it and to signal agents when compartments containing the fake drugs were being opened.Court documents say Resendez picked up the car at Horizon Lines early Friday. He then went to Carl's Junior on Nimitz Highway, where a man got into the driver's seat and took Resendez to the airport.Agents followed the Mustang to a house on Kailoa Street in Ewa Beach. While en route, they received an alert that someone had removed the car door frames and accessed the packages inside.“So at that point the agents knew that someone had gone into the car and tried to take the drugs out,” Loo said. The Mustang was driving away from the neighborhood as agents approached the house.According to court documents a Federal helicopter kept tabs of the Mustang, following it as it ran through a red light, cut through oncoming traffic, crossed double solid lines and sped on the shoulder to bypass traffic. The Mustang appeared to make a U-turn just before crashing in the tunnel.Federal Authorities identified the driver of the Mustang as Marvin Edgar Burrow Jr. He died at Castle Medical Center.Federal prosecutors said he had fluorescent powder on his hands, which indicates he handled the packages of fake drugs. Federal agents arrested Resendez at the airport on Friday as he was about to board a flight to the mainland.According to court documents Resendez admitted he shipped two vehicles to Honolulu, a Honda in 2009 and the Mustang. He also admitted that he was paid $1,000 cash for each trip to Honolulu.
