HONOLULU -- The state Department of Land and Natural Resources has completed an enviromental assessment of a plan to replenish the sand along Waikiki Beach. The proposal would pump sand from offshore in order to widen the shoreline by about 40 feet. Oahu's popular south shore has long battled an erosion problem. The report points to visitor surveys which indicate that 12 percent of tourists who said the would not return, cite the limited beach area and overcrowding."I would love to come back but it is overcrowded and I wish there was more space for people to tan and just relax on the beach." said Patrick Heeley."I think it necessary. It's important to replenish the sand in this place," said Waikiki resident Serge Nicholson. The project is estimated to cost between $2.5 million and $3.5 million. The state estimates the project to take about three months to complete. Work could start next year.
