Embattled Honolulu City Councilman Rod Tam said he will introduce a resolution to eliminate the discretionary fund allowance given to council members to avoid the same problems he has encountered. Two weeks ago the city ethics commission announced Tam had agreed to reimburse the city more than $11,000 in taxpayer money. Tam also has agreed to pay a $2,000 fine. The commission said Tam had turned in receipts for meetings that were not city business from 2006 to 2009, mostly meals at restaurants including the Vineyard Boulevard Zippy's.Tam claimed he made math errors but does not admit to doing anything wrong. He was stripped of all his committee assignments including the chairmanship of the powerful zoning committee. On Sunday, Tam announced a resolution he said would eliminate the fund so that no one would make the same mistakes in the future."Maybe we don't need the funds at all because I will still be in the community, so we don't have any more problems in the future," Tam said. "Let's get rid of it."Tam was joined Sunday by a member of an organization called the National Voter's Union. The group claims Tam approached the group for its help. KITV could not find any listing for the group in the phone book or online.Councilman Charles Djou had previously called for Tam to step down.
