A man was killed on Friday after his car crashed while speeding near the eastbound tunnel of the H-3 Freeway, police said.

The crash happened shortly after 11 a.m. near the Tetsuno Harano Tunnel. A red Ford Mustang with California license plates was speeding up the freeway when the driver lost control.

"The vehicle went out of control across both Kaneohe-bound lanes of traffic striking the right concrete barrier... the car rebounded off of at the barrier and ended up in the left-hand Kaneohe-bound lane inside the Harano tunnel," Lt. David Nilsen said.

Police shutdown the Kaneohe-bound lanes of the freeway for hours as traffic investigators, undercover narcotics officers and federal agencies investigated the crash.

Paramedics treated a 39-year-old man in the car and took him to Castle Medical Center in critical condition, where he later died.

No one else was injured in the crash.
