Kauai County spent about $45,000 for payroll and other expenses to prepare for the tsunami on Feb. 27, a spokeswoman said.

Most islands reported sea level changes at various locations as part of a Pacific-wide tsunami generated by an 8.8-magnitude earthquake off Chile.

Honolulu spent about $330,000, Hawaii County about $274,000 and Maui County about $113,000.

Much of the costs for the counties were associated with overtime for personnel, including police officers who helped evacuate the coastal inundation zones.
