Key Senator Refuses To Hear Bill

Rep. Kymberly Pine said Thursday Sen. Roz Baker told her she is unwilling to hold a hearing for the flag bill in her committee.

That means the flag bill will die.

Pine said Baker told her she didn't think the flag bill was necessary.

Opponents of the flag bill say planned community members have many ways to work out their flag flying disputes with their community associations without the intervention of the legislature.

Veterans massed at the State Capitol last month hoping for approval of a bill to make flag flying rules at the planned residential communities less restrictive.

Some veterans said they had been cited and fined in their communities for keeping up their American flags up too long, or for flying flags on poles that did not meet community design rules.

The flag bill made it through the state House but now it is shelved in the Senate.

Pine says she will continue to rally veterans to push for the flag bill to be revived later in the session.

But key state senators told KITV the bill will not advance this year.
