A Palolo home was destroyed by an early-morning fire Thursday, but officials said no one was seriously injured.

Investigators said the blaze started at about 1:40 a.m. at a home on Paalea Street near 9th Avenue.

Crews said that the house was engulfed in flames when the first fire company arrived four minutes later.

Officials said it took about 30 firefighters 20 minutes to put out the blaze. They said the fire gutted the top floor of the two-story home and that three people were in the house when it started but they managed to escape.

Authorities said two people suffered minor injuries from the heat and smoke.

Neighbors said they rushed outside when they heard some sort of commotion.

"I woke up to loud glass slamming on the ground and I heard a lady scream. In my sleep, I come outside and everything was red. It's like fire wood burning," said neighbor Tamara Carlson.

"It was just an orange ball of fire. The whole house was completely covered in fire and you could feel the heat from way back here -- half way down the block," said neighbor Helene Kuwaye.

The damage has been estimated at about $600,000.

Authorities said two dogs and a bird were also in the home when the fire started, but that all survived.

Fire investigators are at the scene trying to determine the cause of the blaze.
