HONOLULU -- Waikiki will play host to a group of special Marines on Thursday morning. The “Commandant’s Own” is the Marine drum and bugle corps. The ceremonial unit also includes the precision silent drill platoon and color guard that displays the ribbons from every campaign the US Marine Corps has waged since the American Revolution. The battle color ceremony is something that dignitaries and heads of state get to enjoy. But now, thanks to a campaign waged by Lt. Gen. John Goodman, the former commander of Marine Forces Pacific, Hawaii is also on the list.On Wednesday night, Goodman was on hand for a public performance at Radford High School.“I am delighted to be here. This is important because normally they go to the West Coast of the United States and perform out there, throughout California, Arizona, and Nevada and the Pacific gets bypassed,” Goodman said. The battle color detachment appeared at Radford high school Wednesday night. Friday’s performance in Waikiki will be at Fort DeRussy across from the Hale Koa hotel starting at 10 a.m.On Friday, the group will perform at Marine Corps Base Hawaii at 9:30 a.m. Its final performance will be on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Kaiser High School in Hawaii Kai.The Battle Color Detachment also performed in Iwo Jima, Okinawa and Guam. It will head to California next week.
