The tsunami warning on Feb. 27 cost Hawaii's counties hundreds of thousands of dollars, officials said.

The biggest cost for the Big Island was more than $106,000 in overtime pay for 324 Hawaii Police Department personnel called in to prepare for the tsunami generated by an 8.8 magnitude earthquake off Chile, officials said.

A total of 873 county employees were called in during the event, officials said. It cost Hawaii County more than $274,00.

Maui County spent $113,895 on overtime for various departments.

"In situations like these, one life lost is one life too many and despite the costs we incurred, I'm grateful that we escaped unharmed," Mayor Charmaine Tavares said.

KITV4 News previously reported that the tsunami threat cost Honolulu City and County $330,000.
