A smoking ban could soon extend beyond restaurants and into cars on the Big Island.

A Hawaii County Council member introduced a bill this week to make it illegal to smoke in the car there is a child as a passenger.

The bill has the support of anti-smoking advocates.

However, several council members told a local paper they are concerned the smoking ban for cars will distract from the budget process.
