Maui police confirm they're investigating a possible hate crime, after fire destroyed a home in Kapalua.

Fire officials said its arson.

The fire destroyed the home in the exclusive plantation golf estates in Kapalua on Saturday night.

It caused a total of $8.5 million in damage.

According to police, fire investigators found several areas where the fire started.

Police found a suspicious inscription one the side of van parked near the home. It read "payback haole."

Detectives said that raised suspicion that this could be a hate crime. But they admit it could be a way for arsonists to mislead police.

No one was injured.

The owner and his family were vacationing in Colorado.
