The Honolulu Police Department on Tuesday announced it is suspending the posting of mug shots on its Web site of people arrested on suspicion of drunken driving.

The pilot program began in November. Since then, photos were posted on HPD's Web site for 24 hours of all of the DUI arrests made in a given week. The pictures were posted each Wednesday at 10 a.m.

HPD is reviewing the program, a statement from a spokeswoman said.

Police said they hoped the potential humiliation would act as a deterrent for motorists who drink.

Some defense attorneys questioned putting the names for the public to see before the cases are reviewed.
