HONOLULU -- A controversial group that gives money to drug and alcohol addicts to not get pregnant is here in Honolulu this week.Project Prevention gives $300 to addicts for long-term birth control like IUDs, hormone shots and patches.Founder Barbara Harris of North Carolina has four adopted children from drug-addicted mothers. She said she is trying to prevent unwanted, drug-exposed kids from being born. Critics believe addicts will use the money to fuel their habits, which Harris doesn't dispute."That's their choice if women use the money to use drugs, but babies don't have a choice," said Harris. "At least they won't get pregnant."Harris said she does not encourage abortions or sterilization. The group previously encouraged sterilizations, but came under fire from civil rights groups. Each year, roughly 300 women get money that comes from donations, according to Project Prevention. The number for Project Prevention is 1-888-30-CRACK.
