Fire investigators are trying to figure out what caused a fire that destroyed a home in Enchanted Lake on Saturday night. The fire caused at least $400,000 in damage.

The Mattos family was attending a dinner at the Hilton Hawaiian Village when the fire broke out just after 7 p.m. “My neighbor called my daughter on her cell phone and said the house was burning,” homeowner Elliott Mattos said. “So everybody just got up and we all left before eating dinner.”

No one was at home except for the family dog, 7-year-old Kiani. Firefighters found her body under a bed in a bedroom. They say the dog likely died of smoke inhalation.

Mattos also lost his Harley Davidson motorcycle and his precious Jim Beam bottle collection. “Beautiful bottles. They’re all in cases. About a dozen of them. That’s all gone,” he said.

Mattos said insurance money will allow him to build a new house on this property, where his family has lived for 47 years. “I have great neighbors. Every one of these neighbors helped,” Mattos said.

The Mattos family had planned a surprise party for Elliott Mattos’ 75th birthday at his house on Sunday, but Saturday night’s fire forced the family to re-locate to the front yard. “They had food all ready to celebrate here on the patio,” Mattos said. “We’re going to celebrate right here.”

“We’ll pull together and we’ll try to make the best of it you know, like a family does,” said Mattos’ brother, Willie Mattos.

Although Mattos won’t have the surprise party his family originally planned, he is content that his family surrounds him on his 75th birthday.
