HONOLULU -- The body of a man presumed to be that of a missing boater was recovered off Oahu's windward side Saturday. The boater was reported missing off Pyramid Rock Beach on the Kaneohe Marine Corps Base at 6:19 p.m. Friday.Air traffic controllers from the U.S. Marine base were the first to spot the boater in distress.Military officials responded to the beach. They made visual contact with the boater and could hear him yelling for help. But rough seas prevented rescue swimmers from making physical contact."The sun went down and the waves were to sever for swimmers to reach this person and boats were on their way to assist but unfortunately they lost visual contact," said Major Alan Crouch, a spokesperson for the Marine Corps Base Hawaii.Rescue crews from the Federal Fire Department along with Navy sailors, marine base lifeguards, the U.S. Coast Guard and the Honolulu Fire Department were all involved in the search for the missing boater. The search continued Saturday until rescue divers discovered the body of a man 20 yards offshore."At about 1:40 this afternoon Marine Corps Base Hawaii lifeguards were able to find and retrieve a body in the surf at Pyramid Rock Beach," said Crouch.A positive identification of the body will be determined by the Honolulu medical examiner.
