The state began charging tourists and tour vehicles a fee on Friday for visiting the Nuuanu Pali State Wayside, also known as the Pali lookout, according to officials.

An attendant charges non-Hawaii residents a $3 fee per vehicle. Hawaii residents can show their local identification card and will not be charged.

The State Department of Land and Natural Resources approved the new parking fees in December to maintain and repair park facilities at a time when budgets are being cut.

The park has more than 900,000 visitors per year.
