The state will plant 20 native loulu palms and other trees along a 1.35-mile section of Kailua Road between Castle Medical Center and the Kawainui Stream bridge as part of an erosion control and highway beautification project. The palms were donated by the Lani-Kailua Outdoor Circle in partnership with the state Department of Transportation. The palms will replace 25 similar palms that were removed in 2006 when the state had to realign and repair the road following a major rockslide. In addition to the loulu palms the state will plant coconut palms, kukui nut trees, rainbow shower trees and pink tecoma trees. There will be lane closures next week in both directions on Kailua Road between the hospital and Hamakua Drive from 8:30 a.m. the 3 p.m. as crew plant the trees. Motorists are advised to use caution or avoid the area.
