Oahu, Maui Counties To Close Water Treatment Plants

HONOLULU -- Hawaiian Electric Company said its crews are preparing for the tsunami's impact on services in the state.Officials said they are making sure to fill their vehicle gas tanks and secure HECO facilities. They are also mobilizing crews and staging them in possibly hard-hit areas.HECO is urging residents to make sure they have a battery-operated radio for updates. Also, they are asked to double check flashlights, radios to make sure work and if possible, utilize a portable generator.Residents are asked to assist others and particularly the elderly whose life is dependent on electrical equipment. They are urged to move to facilities with the capability to support their machines.HECO is advising evacuees to turn their refrigerator and freezers to coldest settings to make sure their food stays fresh in case of a power outage. The Oahu and Maui counties waste water treatment plants are expected to shut down. An exact time estimate was not immediately disclosed.Officials said if salt water gets into the electrical system it could blow it and repairs could take weeks and because of that the plant's closure is imminent.If high water use continues while the plant is closed, there is a potential that waste water could come up in the ocean.
