The search continues for a missing woman who disappeared on Maui's north shore.

Laura Vogel
Laura Vogel was last seen before a hike in Haiku.
Laura Vogel was last in contact with friends on Sunday night, but then did not show up for a tutoring job Monday morning.

She had spent Sunday camping in the vicinity of the "birthing pools" along the cliffs below the Haiku Community Center. Friends found her van and belongings there, but no sign of Vogel.

Thousands of miles away in New Mexico, Joan Vogel anxiously waits for word about her daughter.

"You feel helpless," she said.

Joan Vogel said she has called her daughter's cell phone hundreds of times since she last heard from Laura on Sunday night.

Police and fire teams have conducted searches on land, in the water and in the air for the missing woman and do not suspect foul play at this point. Meanwhile dozens of friends have been busy looking for Vogel as well, even bringing in hunting dogs to try to pick up her scent on Wednesday.

If you have any information on the missing woman, you are urged to call Maui police.

Joan Vogel said police investigators do not suspect foul play.

"I think they feel she slipped and fell over the cliff, which is a 50- to 60-foot sheer rock cliff that goes right into the ocean," Joan Vogel said.

Fire rescue crews scoured the ocean and the rest of the area since Monday. Dozens of Laura Vogel's friends have searched alongside rescue crews, the last two days. Searchers brought in hunting dogs to try to pick up her scent.

Vogel's family intends to join the search when they arrive on Maui Thursday.

"It's extremely difficult. You feel like your hands are tied. You don't know what you can do," Joan Vogel said.

As the search for Laura Vogel enters its fourth day, the Vogel family is hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst.

"We need closure of some sort," Joan Vogel said.
