HONOLULU -- A Massachusetts couple finished a 14,000-mile trek across the country in Hawaii on Monday, marking the end of a successful mission to volunteer in all 50 states in 50 days.Tim Malcom and Kirsten L'Orange on Monday helped prepare nearly 1,500 meals for low-income seniors in need through Lanakila's Meals on Wheels program."Not only are you providing a meal, providing companionship, but you're also providing a safety check to maintain their independence and stay in their home," L'Orange said.Malcom was laid off from the construction industry when business slowed. He made that into an opportunity to make a difference."Once we did get laid off, I had that freedom to figure out what I wanted to do with my life," Malcom said. "It freed me up to do something I was passionate about."L'Orange became so inspired by Malcom's volunteer work that she quit her job and joined him. They saw people going through tough times everywhere they went. That's when "The Civic Projects Serving 50 States in 50 Days" road trip began. Volunteer organizations need help, they said."With donations going down for the first time in 20 years and this huge increase in the need for services, that the only way to feasibly close the gap is through volunteer hours," L'Orange said. With organizations in such dire need of help, anyone can volunteer, even if it's just for an hour, L'Orange said."We've done soup kitchens, horse rescues, we've done dogs, we've done arts programs – just the whole scope of what it means to serve," L'Orange said. The couple paid for the trip in large part through donations."We've put together an amazing network of friends, family, strangers, friends all across the country to put us up at night and to feed us," Malcom said. "But it's just been amazing to see the amount of generosity we've received across the country."Malcolm and L'Orange are headed back to Massachusetts. He is still unemployed. She said she might get her job back.
