As students face another furlough Friday in two days parents are more and more frustrated and so are their elected representatives.

It's been months since the discussion to take $50 million from the rainy day fund to end the school furloughs. Lawmakers to choose between schools and human services and some don't appreciate being put on the spot.

"Who are we to say that education is more important than health and human services and then, for you to say a comment like, 'take leadership' -- and understand -- we have a duty to all three of those functions," said Rep. Sharon Har, D-Kapolei.

"This is the body to make those kinds of hard decisions and hard choices," said public school parent Marguerite Butler-Higa. "We are appealing to anyone who can please help in this situation."

When the teachers union pointed out that furloughs were the governor's idea, a Republican suggested they accept a five percent pay cut instead.

"You have a key here that you could use to end furlough Friday and you are not using that key. All I am asking is that everyone come to the table," said Rep. Lynn Finnegan.

"The difference is, we have a contract -- you also have the power to come back and reopen the contract. I, personally, do not have the power," said Hawaii State Teachers Association President Wil Okabe.

In the end, an 8-year-old said it all.

"What do you think about furlough Fridays?" KITV 4 News reporter Daryl Huff asked.

"I think they're a piece of crap," said student Coe Yamauchi.

No important decisions were made on Wednesday. Lawmakers are considering a variety of ways including tax increases to pay for whatever the governor, the Department of Education and the union come up with.
