Widow Recalls Loss; 18-Year-Old Charged With Murder

HONOLULU -- The widow of Patrick Matsuda, the father of four, is still trying to cope with his loss. The 40-year-old man was beaten to death outside his home in South Bakersfield, Calif.The fight happened Sunday morning at about 2:30 a.m."It was awful -- something that nobody should ever see. It's an image that I will always remember," said Annette Matsuda.Images: Crime Scene, VictimPolice said he went across the street to a home to try to get partygoers to quiet down. He confronted a man and a woman and detectives say Matsuda punched both of them."The male got away, ran up to the house and summoned additional partygoers to come out to assist them. The group came out of the house and they kind of surrounded Matsuda as he retreated toward his driveway," said Sgt. Mary Degeare, with Bakersfield Police Department.Bakersfield police said Matsuda and a man at the party across the street both went back out to the street with baseball bats and police said Matsuda struck the woman again and that's when things got really violent."The unidentified male suspect struck Matsuda in the head at which point he fell on the ground and at that point. Clifford started striking him with the bat while he lay on the ground, and other partygoers also joined in and were hitting and kicking him as he lay on the ground," Degeare said.His 18-year-old neighbor, Blayne Clifford, has been charged with first-degree murder in Matsuda's death. Clifford appeared in court on Tuesday in California and is being held on $1 million dollars bail."He was beaten to death, with no remorse for the people that were trying to beat him," said Annette Matsuda.Video from the 2001 national bodybuilding contest showed Patrick Matsuda winning the title of Mr. USA. He's a 1987 graduate of Mililani High School.The Bakersfield Californian newspaper reports that Matsuda was convicted of conspiring to distribute the drug ecstasy in 2001 for which he served 13 months in federal custody.
