KAPOLEI, Hawaii -- Commuters in one of the heaviest traveled areas of Leeward Oahu are about to get some relief, but that has some people concerned about the safety for students at Kapolei Middle School. The new Kapolei Parkway, set to open on Thursday, will link drivers between Kapolei and Ewa.The roadway has six lanes of traffic. It is a major thoroughfare right in front of Kapolei Middle School."I mean, it's a good thing the road is opening, but at the same time it's a very scary thing -- very scary for the school. It's scary for the community. All of us are concerned about this road opening up," said Terry Bunkley, of Kapolei Middle School.School officials and parents said they are worried about students trying to cross what is sure to be a busy highway. Some are warning their kids to stay away from the road."They're not even going 25 (mph). They're going fast. So, I'm hoping they stay inside the school bus and don't even go out there," parent Jaclyn Peahi said. The speed limit is posted as 25 mph in the school zone. Even before the main part of the parkway is open cars are already exceeding that.Parents and school officials want to remind drivers to slow down. The fine for speeding in a school zone is $297.
