Some Punalu'u residents are getting impatient over a smelly whale carcass that has been on the beach since last week.

Residents said they saw the whale carcass floating just offshore last Wednesday and Thursday. It came ashore Thursday or Friday and the changing tide has been pushing it around since then.

It appears to be a young whale, not full-sized still very large. It's attracting a lot of flies, and a lot of curious onlookers.

Nearby residents said some Native Hawaiians came by and performed a ceremony.

"There have been some protocols. There were some prayers some songs offered during the day while the whale was beached up against the wall. Again the tide changed the whale is beached here now," resident Zoey Chang said.

When the wind is right, neighbors blocks away have been complaining about the smell.

Residents said a city crew came by and made an inspection on Monday.

"They came by early this morning to do an assessment," Chang said. "I'm quite sure, when the time comes, everything will be pono, and then, the whale will be put to rest."

Some want faster action. One resident brought a backhoe and tried to break up the whale and bury it but was not successful. The folks who live near the beach said they didn't think that was such a good idea.

However, an agent for the Department of Land and Natural Resources said they're not equipped to dispose of whales.

In past cases, the agency worked with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the city.

The resident with the backhoe managed to push the carcass back out into the water. It's not clear if that will do any good.
