A 33-year-old construction worker was critically injured on Thursday morning after a set of scaffolding fell onto the man at a residence in Waipahu, officials said.

What police have categorized as an industrial accident happened at about 7:30 a.m. at a home on Waipio Point Access Road.

The scaffolding, which workers said weighed about a ton, pinned Eugene Miguel, 33, underneath, authorities said. A police officer who first arrived on the scene helped lift the scaffolding off the man, officials said.

Officer Joseph Lefcourt was first on the scene.

"Right when I turned the corner, I could see a body underneath a bunch of wood and some metal, and if you can imagine the body bent in half with his feet next to his head over here," Lefcourt said.

Coworkers tried to dig Miguel out from under the scaffolding.

Knowing there was not much time, the officer said he grabbed some rebar and did a dead lift to hoist several hundred pounds of weight off the man.

"I told another guy while we were holding it to try to pull him out because we couldn't hold it that long," Lefcourt said.

Miguel did not have a pulse nor was he breathing when they pulled him from the rubble.

Lefcourt performed CPR until paramedics arrived.

Paramedics treated the victim and took him to Queen's Medical Center in what officials described as "extremely critical condition." They said he was not breathing when they first got to him. Officials said he has improved, but remains in critical condition.

The man and other crew members were prepping for a concrete pour that was scheduled for 8 a.m., officials said.
