Two visitors from the mainland drowned in separate incidents on Kauai on Monday.

At about 1 p.m., a 20-year-old man visiting from North Carolina drowned while snorkeling at Waiohai Bay in Poipu. He was found face down about 20 feet from shore.

Lifeguards performed CPR until firefighters and paramedics arrived. The man was transported to Wilcox Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

In the second incident, a 41-year-old man, visiting from Portland, Ore., drowned while swimming near Kilauea on Monday.

Officials said just before 1:30 p.m., the man and his 32-year-old brother were swimming at Kauapea or "secret beach" when the strong current swept them out and around the coast towards Hanalei.

A surfer in the area swam out to help them and was able to bring the younger man back to shore safely.

The man who was rescued by the surfer then grabbed a rescue tube and swam back out to try and help his older brother. When he reached him, he found his brother face down in the water.

Rescue crews arrived on scene and the man was taken to Wilcox Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
