AIEA, Hawaii -- Aiea residents say Saturday's fatal crash could have been prevented if drivers would just slow down. The crash killed a 23-year-old Honolulu man and injured five others. The accident happened just before 6:30 p.m. Saturday on Halawa Heights Road and Iwaiwa Street.Police said a motorcyclist was speeding, going faster than 50 mph, when he collided with a station wagon driven by a 16-year-old girl with a provisional license. All but one of the five passengers in the station wagon were young children. The driver of the motorcycle died and a 13-year-old boy suffered critical injuries. The medical examiner has not identified the motorcycle driver."All we heard was a loud crash, boom," witness Merieleilani Galacgac said. "I come running out here and I see the guy, I see the guy underneath the motorcycle. I run to them to comfort them and they were so hysterically upset. I see the little boy in the backseat with his head all bleeding."The accident wasn't the first at the intersection. In 2005, an Aiea man died after crashing his motorcycle into a car. Neighbors say the area is a magnet for speed."Some people like speeding up the hill," witness Sid Remigio said. "Some people like speeding across the intersection."Despite police saying they have set up speed traps in the area, residents say what would really make a difference is a traffic light at the intersection.Police said this is the 53rd fatality on Oahu this year, which compares to 44 last year.
