HONOLULU -- A 48-year-old visitor from California appears to have drowned Sunday afternoon while vacationing on Kauai, officials said.

Fire rescue crews responded to Kipu Falls at about 1:40 p.m.

The man and his son jumped off the top of the falls and into the pool, witnesses told authorities.

The two surfaced and the man escorted his son to a nearby rock. However, as the man started swimming to another area, he went under and never came up, officials said.

Fire rescue crews later found him at the bottom of the pool.

He was pronounced dead at Wilcox Memorial Hospital.
