According to traffic officials, a high rate of speed was likely a contributing factor in a collision between a motorcycle and a truck Saturday afternoon.

The collision occurred one half mile west of the Harano Tunnel on the H-3 West bound just before 1 p.m. Saturday.

The rider of a Harley Davidson Motorcycle, a 36-year-old Waipahu man, was travelling at a high rate of speed when he lost control and was ejected from his bike.

The rider then collided with another vehicle, a truck operated by a 61-year-old Kailua man, before coming to a halt. He was not wearing a helmet.

The rider of the motorcycle was taken away and was listed in critical condition at Queen's Medical Center. The driver of the truck was unharmed.

Police and traffic officials closed the left lane of the H-3 West bound Saturday until roughly 3 p.m., causing a traffic backup to the Likelike Highway on the windward side.

It is unknown at this time whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
