Big Island police on Monday warned the public to be aware of a possible telephone scam.

A Puna woman told police she received a call last week from a man who said he represented the Hawaii Tribune-Herald newspaper.

The man said the newspaper was looking for people who wanted to make donations, police said.

The woman told police she noted that her caller ID showed the man was not calling from the newspaper. After she questioned the caller, the man hung up, police said.

Police said they confirmed that the newspaper is not asking for donations.

The Hawaii County Police Department warned the public to beware of people asking for donations during the holiday season.
