Oahu Braces For Smoky New Year

Businesses Provide 'Safe Havens'

UPDATED: 2:40 p.m. HST December 28, 2000

Business have banded together to provide masks and places to wait out the heavy smoke created by fireworks on New Year's Eve on Oahu.

Officials launched operation 'Safe Haven' last year. The project brought together hotels, theatres and camps to give people with respiratory problems a place to get away to.

Gaspro also donated 2,000 masks to help block out the smoke. The masks are available at the American Lung Association of Hawaii at 245 North Kukui St., Suite 100. If the association runs out of masks, Gaspro is selling more at its store.

This is the second year of the project. The companies developed the project in response to the number of people who suffer from asthma, bronchitis, emphysema and other pulmonary diseases.
