HONOLULU -- The community spoke out and the state transportation department changed the hours it will close Kalanianaole Highway near Makapu'u.

The state plans a major overhaul of the retaining wall between the Makapu'u Lookout and the entrance to Makapu'u Beach Park.

The project initially called for one lane contra-flows during the day and road closures at night, but the community objected, saying daytime contra-flow would cause traffic and hurt Waimanalo businesses.

The DOT has now adjusted its schedule and will shut down Kalanianaole Highway near Makapu'u Sundays through Thursdays between 9:30 p.m. and 5:30 a.m.

The work will start on Nov. 29 and last for one week. It will then resume after the holidays.
