Honolulu police on Monday arrested a driver accused of dragging an officer during a routine traffic stop in Kakaako on Sunday.

Gerald Galon Jr., 29, was released from Queen's Medical Center on Monday morning where he stayed overnight. Police took him straight to the Honolulu Police Department's main cellblock.

He was booked on a charge of second-degree attempted murder.

Galon was sleeping in a car with the engine running on Cooke Street for most of the morning when officers approached him, authorities said. Galon gave an officer a state ID card that was not his, police said.

When he was told to turn off his engine and hand over the keys, he drove off dragging a 46-year-old police sergeant a short distance, HPD said.

A second officer fired three shots at the car. One hit Galon in the right hip, officials said.

Galon's parents Ewa Beach neighbors said they were shocked Galon might be involved in such an incident.

"They're nice people, especially the parents. They are nice people. I don't think, you know, for them to raise a boy that can do something like that, it's pretty shocking," neighbor Tina Corpus said.

Police found the Honda sedan Galon was in abandoned in Kalihi shortly after the shooting.

Investigators were able to track Galon down when he checked himself into Kapiolani Medical Center at Pali Momi. He was later transferred to Queen's Medical Center.

Police are still trying to determine who owns the car. It is registered to an owner in Wahiawa, but it was not reported stolen.

It is also unclear if Galon was armed.

Along with the attempted murder charge, Galon is being held for two outstanding traffic warrants and for using someone else's ID.

His bail for the two warrants is set at $4,000.
