Forecasters at the National Weather Service issued a high surf advisory for Kauai, Niihau, Oahu, Molokai and Maui on Monday with more on the way by Thanksgiving Day.

The areas under the advisory include the north- and west-facing shores of Kauai and Niihau and the north-facing shores of Oahu, Molokai and Maui.

A storm near Alaska generated a large swell that will peak on Monday, forecasters said.

Surf is expected to range from 15 to 20 feet high for the north shores of Kauai, Niihau and Oahu. Molokai and Maui could see sets of 12 to 18 feet.

The advisory is set to expire at 6 a.m. on Tuesday.

Surf should hit a low right at about sunset on Tuesday before a huge northwest swell builds rapidly into Wednesday.

The high surf is good news for the final day of the Reef Hawaiian Pro, the first leg of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. The contest is being held at Alii Beach in Haleiwa.
