HONOLULU -- Fire destroyed a downtown home on Saturday night. The two-alarm fire broke out just before 6 p.m. at 1475 Punchbowl St. It took about an hour for firefighters to extinguish the fire, officials said. The family who lived in the home -- two adults and three girls ranging in age from 7 to 19 years old -- escaped. One female family member was treated for smoke inhalation, but none of the residents was injured. The family pets may not have survived, officials said. The family had two Chihuahuas and a puppy. The family members told fire officials that they had just sat down for dinner when they smelled smoke inside the rental house.Investigators said they did not know an exact cause of the fire, but they know the family had fried food for dinner.Neighbors said the fire started in the back of the home and quickly spread to the front. The house is considered a total loss, officials said.
