A construction crane toppled over in Kailua nearly crushing two women in a jeep.

The crash took out a major power line, plunging thousands of homes and drivers into darkness in the Maunawili and Olomana area.

It happened on Auloa Road, also known as Luana Hills Road, leading to the entrance of Luana Hills Golf Club, just after 5:30 p.m. Friday.

Police said it's amazing that no one was hurt or killed in the accident.

The construction crane fell across Luana Hills Road, just off Kalanianaole Highway, near Castle Medical Center.

It nearly crushed a Jeep with two women tourists inside. It came to rest on the hood of the Jeep just a couple of feet from where they were sitting. Police said they were returning from a hike when the crane came down and were not hurt.

The crane, which belongs to a company called Pacific Crane, was being stored in a construction yard when it fell over. A company representative refused to say what happened but said the company plans to remove the crane at first light Saturday.

Hawaiian Electric said the accident also damaged a utility pole and tore down a 12,000-volt primary electrical line across the street. That caused a blackout in Maunawili and Olomana leaving Kalanianaole Highway in the dark from Castle Medical Center to Castle Junction, near the Pali Golf Course.

Street lights and traffic lights were out, so police directed traffic along Kalanianaole, at the intersections of Auloa and Kapaa Quarry Roads.

Hawaiian Electric sent a crew to repairing the power line.

It's unclear exactly when power will be restored to homes and roadways in the Maunawili area.
