POSTED: 3:59 pm HST November 20, 2009

Big Island police are investigating a break-in that led to a shooting in Kau on Thursday night.

It happened at about around 10 p.m. in Hawaiian Ocean View Estates.

John Fitzsimmons, 45, had been sleeping in his home on King Kamehameha Boulevard when an acquaintance, Justin Michaels, 34, climbed through a window and punched Fitzsimmons several times, police said.

Michaels then exited the house, police said. However, when he tried to reenter through the front door, Fitzsimmons fired two shots, hitting Michaels once in the left upper thigh, police said.

Paramedics treated Michaels for a gunshot wound to his left leg and took him to Kona Community Hospital. He was later released to police.

Police arrested Michaels on burglary charges and Fitzsimmons on an assault charge.

Police are holding both men at the Kealakehe cellblock while they investigate.
