HONOLULU -- The Honolulu Police Department announced on Wednesday that it will begin posting the photos of people arrested on drunken driving charges. The photos will be posted on HPD's Web site for 24 hours of all of the DUI arrests made in a given week. The pictures will be posted each Wednesday at 10 a.m.Police said they hope the potential humiliation will act as a deterrent for motorists who drink.Defense attorney Paul Cunney objects to putting up names and photos before the case is even reviewed."It just goes right from the arrest to the TV screen. So where's the due process? A person is presumed innocent. I can see a person's been convicted in court maybe showing it. This is a petty misdemeanor and put pictures on TV screen now the whole world knows about it and the person hasn't had a day in court," Cunney said.It is a pilot program that will last six months, but they may even expand and post photos of people arrested for other crimes, police said.Last year, HPD arrested 4,315 drivers on drunken driving charges. Alcohol-related crashes were involved in 20 deaths on Oahu last year, police said.
