A contractor helped free a sailboat from the reef off Waikiki Beach.
The owner of the 72-foot sailboat Momentum hired Cates International to help remove the vessel from the reef about 100 yards off shore from the Sheraton Hotel. The boat ran aground early on Monday morning.

The owner, Leif Hart, said he had anchored the boat about 300 yards offshore, but the anchor line chafed and broke while he and his passengers slept.

Cates towed the boat to Keehi Small Boat Harbor loading dock, where it was inspected. Divers found a 30-foot hole in the port side of the hull. The vessel is expected to be considered a total loss, state officials said.

It is not the first time the boat's owner has run a boat aground.

It is believed reef damage is minimal since just the keel of the boat is lodged, but state aquatics will do a full assessment.

In May, a 44-foot boat, the Fast Forward, ran aground off Kahala. The Department of Natural Resources said that boat was also owned by Hart.
