2 Schofield Soldiers Killed In Chopper Crash

Department Of Defense Investigates Iraq Crash

Two Schofield Barracks-based soldiers were killed in a helicopter crash in Iraq, Department of Defense officials announced on Tuesday.

The crash happened on Sunday in Tikrit.

Chief Warrant Officer Matthew Heffelfinger, 29, and Chief Warrant Officer Earl Scott III, 24, died when their OH-58D Kiowa Warrior chopper crashed.

Heffelfinger is from Kimberly, Idaho. He joined the Army in 2000 and arrived at Schofield Barracks in 2007.

Scott is from Jacksonville, Fla. He joined the Army in 2006 and arrived on Oahu in 2008.

The two were assigned to the 2nd Squadron, 6th Cavalry Regiment, 25th Combat Aviation Brigade, 25th Infantry Division.

In May, two soldiers from the same unit were killed when their helicopter - also a OH-58D - crashed at Wheeler Army Airfield on Oahu.

The military is investigating how the crash happened.
